About Us
History of Chikankari
Originating from Awadh, present day Lucknow region, ’Chikankari’ is a unique hand-embroidery. It is an arduous process, that is a compilation of designing, engraving, block printing, embroidery, washing and finishing. Traditionally, fine muslin was used as the base fabric but now mostly cotton (voile). First, the fabric is cut according to the requirement. Then it is block printed with design motifs on which the embroidery is done by the skilled Lucknowi Kaarigars (craftsmen). The cloth is then washed and is ready to use. It can now be dyed into various shades and stitched into a variety of styles.
Traditionally, Chikan embroidery was done with a white thread on a white base, but now it is available in all possible combinations : white thread on coloured fabrics, coloured thread on white fabric and coloured thread on coloured fabric. However, white on white is a classic, white on pastel shades remains evergreen.
Chikankari is believed to have been popularised in India by Nur Jehan, wife of the Mughal emperor Jahangir. It was brought to India by Persian nobles who would visit the Mughal courts.
